…is now extinct in my life

There are many things I miss and this is definitely one of them. I don’t know how old you are or how much you remember about the early 2000s but before things like YouTube, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, and Soundcloud… Before all of that, there was a beautiful thing called “the radio”. It used to be, for me and many others, the best company you could have. In fact, those were some of the best years of my life (in terms of being memorable).
In fact, I depended on the radio when I was younger. Back then, I didn’t have access to as many CDs, cassettes, or records as I do now. Back then (and before the internet became easily available to everyone), things were much much harder to find (and this applied to basically everything). But in terms of music, if you wanted to hear a specific song but didn’t have access to that song… you had to (at least I did!) call the radio station and ask if they could play it. This was both fun and annoying. Sometimes it would work. But one time I ended up feeling embarrassed when I asked a radio station to play “I will” by The Beatles and they asked me to sing a little bit of it. And I actually did (I was like 13-years-old or so)! I think they even liked it? I think… but they didn’t end up playing it, so that sucked lol!
It was a magical period in my life because I would get so excited when my favorite artists would be on and I definitely had favorite radio stations!
Back then I loved:
- 94.7 FM WLS
- 97.1 FM The Drive
- 103.5 FM KISS FM
- 103.9 FM The Fox (which later became WFXF in 2013)
- 104.3 FM K-Hits
(this was like maybe 2010-2013?)
It used to be the best way to start the day (for me anyway). And I’m disappointed I haven’t felt that way about the radio for a long time now. Although I am glad that I have access to any song I want (and music videos) now through YouTube Music and YouTube… this “gain” came with a huge loss: I lost touch with the radio for good.
It hasn’t been the same in some time now.
I will still cling to the memories I had when it was the center of my life as a teenager.
Thank you to every single radio station DJ for making that period of my life so meaningful.
I will always remember those moments with joy.
